Easily make a living "Chia Seed Earth" craft at home by using cardboard, cotton balls, and chia seeds, whether this is for a seed study or Earth Day, or just because- you’re about to have some crafty nature fun!
What you’ll need:
A Piece of sturdy cardboard or a tray – We used a thick piece of cardboard from the back of an old photo frame. Because it is so thick, it won’t warp too easily with all the daily watering!
Paint – We used your basic kids’ paints from Hobby Craft – mostly typical Earth colours and some black, blue and purple for pretty outer-space colour. I also added a glitter paint to make our outer-space sparkle.
Cotton Wool
Chia seeds (other easily germinating seeds will work also).
Water spray bottle or pipettes
PVA Glue
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Draw the Earth: Draw a large circle on your cardboard to represent the planet, and then add the contents.
2. Paint the Oceans: Paint the blue parts of the cardboard to look like the oceans.
3. Glue the land and add cotton wool: Put PVA glue over all the land area. Roll out the cotton balls, then press them onto the glued cardboard where the land should go.
4. Spray the cotton wool with water – we found that wetting the cotton wool first helps the seeds stick to the cotton wool better.
5. Plant the Seeds: Sprinkle chia seeds generously over the damp cotton balls and gently pat them down.
6. Water Daily: Place your cardboard Earth near a sunny window and water it daily. We found that even if you water them in the morning, they can be bone dry by the evening, so you may want to water them in the afternoon and before bed too.
Be patient, but it won’t be long before you start seeing the little sprouts.
